Chefs Stopping AAPI Hate

May 2022

Libbey supports chefs united to fight hate

As a global tabletop leader for over 200 years, Libbey is proud to partner with foodservice Makers who are amplifying the voices of underserved groups across the industry.

That’s why we recently made a $30,000 donation to Chefs Stopping AAPI Hate, an organization formed in 2021 as a response to anti-Asian violence in the U.S.

Chefs Stopping AAPI Hate brings together Asian-American and Pacific Islander and ally chefs for a series of live and takeout events all benefitting AAPI nonprofits. Along with the donation of dinnerware to those events, Libbey’s cash donation will go toward response funding, lobbyist funding and mentorship for those wanting to grow in the hospitality industry.

The group has experienced tremendous growth in the past year, from a scrappy, volunteer-led organization started by chefs Kevin Tien and Tim Ma to a full-fledged nonprofit with multiple full-time employees. That has broadened the group’s reach and its ability to make a difference.

“Having the support of Libbey and other sponsors – from operations to finance to having dinnerware –takes a big lift off what we’re doing and were able to do more,” Tien says. “It’s exponentially a game changer in what we can do.”

That includes pivoting to causes that are outside the scope of the AAPI community. The group recently held a dinner to support Chef José Andrés World Central Kitchen, raising over $200,000 for the organization’s efforts on the border of Ukraine.

Still, the group’s core mission will always be fighting violence in the AAPI community, because, Ma says, “This isn’t a one-time thing – these attacks are still occurring.” Adds Tien, “Nobody’s voices should be ignored. … We just want to do an event that will empower the voices (of AAPI people).”
